Vogue Italia – “Haute Mess”

Vogue Italia is no stranger to controversy and the editorial “Haute Mess” is the latest addition to their list of editorials that started a debate. The editorial was lensed by Steven Meisel and it is said that the inspiration for the shoot are “messy drag queens”. Most people who’ve seen the editorial think that they’re poking fun at the “ghetto stereotype” on African-Americans. Though there are those who think the editorial is provocative and brilliant, there are also those who think it’s vulgar, racist and very offensive. The editorial features Joan Smalls, Karen Elson, Jessica Stam, Guinevere Van Seenus, Lindsey Wixson, Daphne Groeneveld, Coco Rocha and Abbey Lee Kershaw in over-the-top hair, make-up and fashion. Lori Goldstein did the styling which included pieces from Blumarine, Kenzo, Jeremy Scott and many others for this editorial which is part of Vogue Italia’s March 2012 issue.
